Whereas Ruth called herself a foreigner in 2:10 and said that she was not on the same level as Boaz’ servant girls in verse 13, Boaz used the terms “young woman” in verse 5 and “my daughter” in verse 8. Rather than emphasizing the social distance between him and Ruth and so belittling her, he affirmed her personhood and elevated her standing in the group.
